A paradigm shift is underway in the transportation industry. It is driven by the need to prevent accidents, and reduce traffic congestion and pollution. Advancements in robotics, sensors, artificial intelligence, connectivity, and computing are paving the way for autonomous vehicles to become a reality sooner than one might think. This paradigm shift will further impact a number of things including car ownership, automotive infrastructure, government regulations, and the urban landscape as we know it.

Join HBS Club Columbus members and guests, along with our friends from Harvard and Dartmouth, for an informative evening at the Center for Automotive Research at The Ohio State University. Our panelists will discuss a range of issues relating to automotive technology and autonomous vehicles that will radically transform the future of transportation and our lives as a result.

Giorgio Rizzoni PhD, Director of the Center for Automotive Research, will moderate a panel discussion designed to enlighten our alumni audience on the topic of autonomous vehicles and their impact on transportation and mobility, especially in more urban environments. The panel will comprise both academic and key industry players. Following the discussion, members and guests will be given a behind the scenes tour of the Center for Automotive Research, that will include the record-setting electric vehicle, the Venturi Buckeye Bullet III.

Panelists

Giorgio Rizzoni (Moderator) is the Ford Motor Company Chair in ElectroMechanical Systems, is a Professor of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, and an Adjunct Professor of Industrial Design. Dr. Rizzoni’s research interests are in system dynamics, measurements, control and fault diagnosis with application to automotive systems. He has a special interest in future ground vehicle propulsion systems, including advanced Diesel engines, electric and hybrid-electric drivetrains, and fuel cell systems.

Rabi Mishalani (Urban Mobility) is a Professor in the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geodetic Engineering. His areas of interest and expertise include the application of probabilistic modeling, statistical inference, experimental design and evaluation, and optimization to transportation systems analysis, public transportation service planning and operations, real-time transportation network surveillance and management, and infrastructure systems monitoring and maintenance.

André Carrel (Urban Mobility) is an Assistant Professor of Smart Urban Systems, Department of Civil, Environmental and Geodetic Engineering, in the College of Engineering. Andre Carrel’s research is focused on the acquisition and statistical analysis of large-scale data sets from emerging sources for the planning, design, operations, and monitoring of freight, logistics, and passenger transportation systems and infrastructure.

Arda Kurt (Connected & Autonomous Vehicles) is a Research Assistant Professor at the Electrical and Computer Engineering. Since 2012 he has been a pat of the Ohio State University Center for Automotive Research (CAR), and the Control and Intelligent Transportation Research Laboratory.  His research activities are related to decision making and control for connected/automated vehicles, coordination in mixed-mode traffic, advanced driver assistance systems, and intelligent transportation systems.

The Center for Automotive Research (CAR) is an interdisciplinary research center in The Ohio State University’s College of Engineering. CAR conducts research on advanced automotive and transportation technologies and systems engineering, focusing on sustainable mobility, advanced propulsion systems, human safety and the environment. CAR offers state-of-the-art facilities for students, faculty, research staff, and industry partners. With a concentration on preparing the next generation of automotive leaders, CAR is recognized for its interdisciplinary emphasis on systems engineering, advanced and unique experimental facilities, collaboration on advanced product development projects with industry, and a balance of government and privately sponsored research.
